Removals in Wincanton, Somerset

The A303 runs along the southern edge of Wincanton, and the town's junction with it is grade separated onto the A371, two lanes each way with full access in both directions. That matters more than it reads. A loaded 7.5-tonne joins and leaves without waiting for a gap in fast traffic, so the arrival time we put in the quote is one we can hold. The road itself is the variable. National Highways describes the Somerset stretch of the A303 as unpredictable in summer and at weekends, so we start Wincanton removals early in the day and keep the worst of the holiday Fridays clear where the date allows. Our yard is at Shaftesbury, about twelve miles away, which puts every BA9 address inside a short survey run rather than a half-day trip.

Why us, here

Wincanton, BA9 and the villages around it

Wincanton is a market town of around 6,500 people on the north-east edge of the Blackmore Vale, close to where Somerset meets Dorset and Wiltshire. The commercial core is High Street and Market Place, both inside the conservation area and both carrying Grade II listed frontages. The River Cale runs past Cale Park, the recreation ground the town council looks after. BA9 reaches a long way past the town itself: Bayford and Charlton Musgrove to the east, Holton sitting right on the A303 two miles to the south west, Cucklington on its hill three miles to the south east, and Pen Selwood, Shepton Montague, Yarlington, Bratton Seymour and Maperton in the lanes between them. The town lost its railway station in 1966, so Templecombe and Castle Cary are the nearest platforms and everything else arrives by road.

In Wincanton we cover house removals, packing and storage, and also serve nearby Bruton, Gillingham and Sherborne.

Routes, access & parking

The A371, the B3081 and the racecourse road

Three roads do the work here. The A371 heads north out of town towards Castle Cary, Shepton Mallet and Wells. The B3081 comes the other way, down through Gillingham to Shaftesbury, and its last stretch into Wincanton is a two-mile spur off the Bruton road, which is the way our crews come from the yard. The third is the racecourse approach. Wincanton Racecourse sits about a mile from the centre on that same B3081, over the parish line in Charlton Musgrove, and the Jockey Club warns that traffic builds both going in and coming out at peak times, so we check the fixture list before booking a moving day on that side of town. Out in the BA9 lanes the constraint is width rather than distance. Where a village approach or a farm track will not take a 7.5-tonne, we stand it on firm ground and shuttle with a 3.5-tonne Luton instead of reversing a full load half a mile back out. That call gets made at the survey, not on the doorstep at eight in the morning.

Property types

Listed frontages, post-war streets and lane-end houses

The town centre is the careful end of the job. High Street, Market Place and South Street carry period and listed frontages, which usually means a narrow doorway, a turn on the stairs and an original floor that gets covered before anything crosses it. Around that sit the established residential streets: Bayford Hill on the east side, Verrington Park Road and Dancing Lane over towards the community hospital, Carrington Way north of the centre and Church Fields below it, where access is ordinary and the day runs to time. Then there is the rest of BA9, where a house can be easy to load and still sit at the end of a lane that decides what vehicle turns up. We carry £2.5m public liability and £50,000 goods in transit cover per load, and we would rather plan a move that never needs either.

Practical tips

Where a removal lorry actually stands in Wincanton

Wincanton Town Council lists 58 short-stay on-street bays on High Street and four at Market Place. That is fine for an errand and no use at all for a move that takes six hours. The answer is usually the Memorial Hall car park, which is on High Street itself and which Somerset Council lists as free, open 24 hours, with no height barrier and a 72-hour maximum stay, so the lorry can stand there all day without anyone asking it to shift. Carrington Way is the other option, also free and with no height restriction, on a one-day maximum. Churchfields is smaller again. Where the front door opens straight onto the pavement and the car park is a carry away, we walk that carry at the survey and price it, rather than finding it on the morning.

Frequent questions

What people ask about removals in Wincanton

Do you cover Wincanton and the wider BA9 area?

Yes. We work across Wincanton itself and the BA9 villages around it, including Bayford, Charlton Musgrove, Holton, Cucklington, Pen Selwood and Shepton Montague. Send the postcode and a rough idea of what is going and we will confirm the crew and the vehicle the access will take.

Do you need to visit before quoting a Wincanton move?

Not always. A three-bedroom with ordinary access can be quoted from photographs and a room list. We do want to see it where the property is listed, where the load has to come down a turn in the stairs, or where the address is at the end of a BA9 lane. Our yard is close enough that a survey in Wincanton costs us an hour rather than a day, and we would rather spend it than guess.

How much does a house removal in Wincanton cost?

Access sets it as much as size does. A three-bedroom on Bayford Hill or Carrington Way loads off the kerb and runs as an ordinary day. The same amount of furniture out of a listed frontage on High Street or Market Place means a smaller vehicle working from the car park and a much longer carry, and the quote carries that from the start. Out in the BA9 villages it is the lane that decides the vehicle. We put the figure in writing within the hour once we have both addresses and a rough idea of the volume.

Do you offer house clearance in Wincanton?

Yes. House clearance is one of our services, including clearances tied to probate or a downsize. Tell us what has to be kept, what is going and whether anything needs storing, and we will scope it separately from the removal so the two do not get tangled into one price.

Can you store our things during a Wincanton move?

Yes. If the chain slips or the new house is not ready, the load goes into store rather than sitting on a vehicle overnight, and comes back out when you are ready for it. We build the storage into the same moving plan, so the dates for going in and coming out are agreed before the move rather than after it.

Can you handle long-distance removals from Wincanton?

Yes, anywhere in the UK. The same Marley crew that loads the house unloads it at the other end, and nothing is handed to a subcontractor partway. For a long haul we agree the delivery day and the arrival window at booking, so the far end is not left as a guess.

Can a removal vehicle access Wincanton town centre?

Yes, though the loading position matters more than the vehicle does. The on-street bays on High Street and at Market Place are short stay, so for a full day's work we stand the lorry in a nearby car park and shuttle to the door. We agree that loading point with you before moving day rather than working it out on the morning.

Packing

Full or part, proper materials, careful crew

Marley Moves provides full and part packing services across Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire, using a methodical room-by-room approach and appropriate protective materials. Crockery and ornaments are wrapped carefully, boxes are labelled by room, and furniture is protected for the journey. Many customers ask us to handle the kitchen, glassware and other fragile items while they pack books, clothes and bedding themselves. Full packing is available when time is tight or when a home contains a larger volume of fragile, antique or specialist items. Packing is quoted clearly as part of, or alongside, the removal.

House Clearances

Sensitive, licensed, properly insured

Marley Moves provides sensitive house clearances across Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire for probate, downsizing, end-of-tenancy, post-bereavement and hoarder-property situations. We agree what must be kept before work begins, separate usable items for donation where appropriate, recycle what we can and use licensed disposal routes for genuine waste. Probate and estate clearances are planned around the executor’s or solicitor’s timetable, with photographs and family-kept items handled carefully. Where a visit is useful, we inspect the property before quoting so the written price reflects the access, volume and agreed scope. Many clearances are completed in a day; larger properties can take longer.
