Removals in Sherborne, Dorset

Cheap Street climbs the whole way through Sherborne's centre, with narrow pavements on both sides and stone frontages opening straight onto them. That settles most DT9 moves before anything is loaded: where a vehicle can legally stand, how far the carry runs uphill, and whether the job takes a Luton or something smaller for the lanes off Half Moon Street and Newland. We work that out at survey, not on the morning. Marley Moves covers Sherborne, Castleton, Lenthay and the DT9 villages from our Shaftesbury yard, about half an hour away on the A30, and the written quote comes back within the hour.

Why us, here

What a DT9 address actually means for a Sherborne move

DT9 is wider than the town, and it crosses a county boundary. Sherborne and the villages immediately around it are Dorset, but a good part of the same postcode is Somerset. A DT9 address is therefore not automatically a Dorset address, and out on that side it is usually the lane width that decides the vehicle rather than the house does. Inside the town the postcode splits as well. The historic core, the Abbey on Church Lane and the station on South Street sit in DT9 3. Marston Road and the north side run into DT9 4. Lenthay Road, out on the south-western edge, is DT9 6. Sherborne School stands on Abbey Road beside the Abbey and Sherborne Girls sits on Bradford Road on the north side of the town, so a move out of the centre and a move off Bradford Road meet completely different traffic on the same morning.

In Sherborne we cover house removals, packing and storage, and also serve nearby Yeovil, Wincanton and Gillingham.

Compared

How we compare to other Sherborne removal companies

Sherborne has a modest choice of removal companies: a couple of DT9-based operators, plus regional Dorset and Somerset firms passing through. Three practical differences to consider for a planned move in Sherborne:

A DT9 survey usually happens the same day. The A30 runs from our Shaftesbury yard straight into Sherborne, so a site visit fits inside the working day rather than next week. That matters most on the conservation-area streets, where the price turns on the carry distance and the loading position, and neither of those can be judged from a room count over the phone.

The crew that surveys your DT9 move is the crew that turns up on the day. No subcontracting, no franchise handover, no unfamiliar faces on the morning. Sherborne's core rewards that continuity: the approaches to Cheap Street, Half Moon Street and Long Street, and the restricted access around the Abbey, are all easier for a team that has worked them before. The same in-house crew stays with the job from survey to unload, covered by £2.5m public liability and £50,000 goods in transit per load.

We plan Sherborne moves around the town's calendar, not around ours. Pack Monday, the Thursday and Saturday market, the third-Sunday market and the two boarding schools' term boundaries all change what is possible on a given street on a given date. We check them against your date at quote stage and build the access and any listed-building care into the price, so the number you agree is the number that holds when the crew reaches the street.

We will be straight about the fit. We are not a DT9-resident firm and hold no office in the town, so for a single-item job or a same-hour call-out a mover already parked in Sherborne may suit you better, and we will say so on the phone. Where we earn our place is the planned move: the listed-terrace and boarding-family jobs that want one crew and a price fixed in writing.

Routes, access & parking

Where a removal vehicle can legally stand in Sherborne

Dorset Council's civil parking enforcement policy is the document that decides this, and two lines in it govern most Sherborne jobs. A vehicle may sit on a yellow line for as long as loading is actively taking place, but only where there is no loading restriction marked by yellow blips or chevrons on the kerb, so the kerb markings outside your door are worth a photograph before the date is fixed. Separately, an on-street resident permit bay in Dorset takes a vehicle no more than 2.3 metres high and 5.25 metres long, which rules a Luton out of one. Where the bay or the restriction is the obstacle, residents and businesses can apply to the council for a tradesperson's parking waiver, though it is refused where the vehicle would obstruct the road or create a safety problem, and an officer can withdraw it on the day. Culverhayes is the obvious place to hold a second vehicle, at 263 spaces the largest car park in the town, but a 2.1 metre height restriction applies there between 6pm and 8am. Nothing tall goes in or out overnight, so an early start in the centre is built around an 8am release rather than assumed. Acreman Street, Old Market Yard, Digby Hall and Newland North take the pressure off elsewhere. Out at Marston Road, Lenthay and the newer streets around Tinneys Lane the constraint changes entirely. There it is driveway width, turning space, and whether the vehicle can be reversed on instead of left sitting across a shared access.

Property types

Sherborne property, from the Cheap Street terraces to the newer estates

The conservation-area core is the demanding end. Cheap Street, Long Street, Half Moon Street, Newland, Trendle Street, Hound Street and Acreman Street carry stone-fronted terraces and flats over shops, a great many of them listed. Runner mats and door and frame protection go down as standard on those jobs, and the time allowed for the carry is measured rather than guessed. Horsecastles and the Victorian and Edwardian streets around it sit in the middle: period detail worth protecting, but usually a kerb the vehicle can reach. Marston Road, Lenthay and the post-war streets are more straightforward again, and the newer housing at Tinneys Lane, over towards Coldharbour, is modern stock where the question is parking rather than protection. Piano and specialist work comes up more often here than the size of the town suggests, and it is usually the older properties near the Abbey where it lands.

Practical tips

Dates a Sherborne move has to be planned around

Sherborne closes its streets more often than most towns this size. Pack Monday Fair falls on the Monday after 10 October every year and trades from 8am to 10pm, with stalls through The Green, Cheap Street, Abbey Road, Half Moon Street, Digby Road and into Pageant Gardens, and road closures to match. A central move does not happen that day, and we will say so rather than take the booking. The Pannier Market runs on The Parade at Cheap Street every Thursday and Saturday from 9am to 3pm, and the monthly Sherborne Market takes over the streets on the third Sunday. Dorset Council's own enforcement guidance is explicit that where a market occupies an on-street parking area, parking is either prohibited outright or reserved for traders, with the signs setting the days and times. A Thursday completion on Cheap Street is perfectly workable, but the loading position is agreed in advance, not found on the morning. The other fixed points are the school terms. Sherborne School and Sherborne Girls both board, so the ends and starts of terms, and the exeat weekends between them, put family cars and hire vans on the same streets at the same time. We check the schools' published term dates against your moving date and move the start time rather than sit in it.

Frequent questions

What people ask about removals in Sherborne

Are you a local removal company covering Sherborne?

Yes. Marley Moves is a removal company covering Sherborne and all of DT9, from the listed terraces in the centre to the Marston Road and Lenthay estates and the villages at Yetminster and Bradford Abbas. We are based at Shaftesbury rather than in the town itself, which is close enough on the A30 for a same-day site visit on most DT9 addresses.

Do you cover DT9 Sherborne and the surrounding villages?

Yes, DT9 in full. On the Dorset side that includes Castleton, Bradford Abbas, Thornford, Yetminster, Chetnole, Longburton, Nether Compton and Over Compton. DT9 also crosses into Somerset at Milborne Port, Sandford Orcas, Charlton Horethorne, Corton Denham, Poyntington and Rimpton, and those sit in our regular Sherborne catchment too.

Can you handle listed-building removals on Cheap Street and Long Street?

Yes, that is routine work here. Guards go on the painted period joinery and we bring a smaller vehicle where the street will not take a Luton. A hoist is rarely an option on a listed frontage, so the plan is normally stairs plus the shortest carry we can arrange, which is why we walk the approach at survey rather than working from photographs.

Do you do term-end and term-start moves for the Sherborne boarding schools?

Yes. Sherborne School on Abbey Road and Sherborne Girls on Bradford Road both board, so term boundaries and exeat weekends change the traffic on the town-centre streets and the parking around both sites. Tell us which school and we will work the timing round its calendar. Boarding-family moves often combine packing, storage and a longer-distance leg, and those are quoted as one job.

How much does a typical 3-bed Sherborne removal cost?

Access decides it as much as the bedroom count does. A modern three-bed at Marston Road or Lenthay is a straightforward day. A period terrace on Cheap Street or Newland needs a longer carry and more protection, and the quote covers that at the outset rather than adding it afterwards. We will not put a number on a Sherborne move without knowing the loading position at both ends.

Do you do house clearances in Sherborne for downsizing or probate?

Yes, sensitive clearance is a steady part of our Sherborne work. Registered waste carrier with the Environment Agency, careful handling of period contents, and charity-donation routing for anything still usable. It is often combined with a downsizing move so you only deal with one company.

Can you store our belongings between two Sherborne moves?

Yes. We collect from your Sherborne address and hold your belongings in wooden containers in secure storage. It suits the patterns we see most in DT9: boarding families whose next home is not ready at a term boundary, chain delays on a Marston Road or Lenthay sale, and downsizers thinning a larger Horsecastles or Newland property first. Storage is quoted alongside the removal so it stays one company and one number.

Packing

Full or part, proper materials, careful crew

Marley Moves provides full and part packing services across Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire, using a methodical room-by-room approach and appropriate protective materials. Crockery and ornaments are wrapped carefully, boxes are labelled by room, and furniture is protected for the journey. Many customers ask us to handle the kitchen, glassware and other fragile items while they pack books, clothes and bedding themselves. Full packing is available when time is tight or when a home contains a larger volume of fragile, antique or specialist items. Packing is quoted clearly as part of, or alongside, the removal.

House Clearances

Sensitive, licensed, properly insured

Marley Moves provides sensitive house clearances across Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire for probate, downsizing, end-of-tenancy, post-bereavement and hoarder-property situations. We agree what must be kept before work begins, separate usable items for donation where appropriate, recycle what we can and use licensed disposal routes for genuine waste. Probate and estate clearances are planned around the executor’s or solicitor’s timetable, with photographs and family-kept items handled carefully. Where a visit is useful, we inspect the property before quoting so the written price reflects the access, volume and agreed scope. Many clearances are completed in a day; larger properties can take longer.
