Mere sits in the far south-west corner of Wiltshire, with the Dorset border a couple of miles one way and Somerset a couple the other. The A303 was taken round the northern edge of the town in 1976, so the trunk road no longer runs through the middle of it and every job here starts by dropping off the bypass onto local streets. The Square is still the old market square, though no market has been held there for years, which means what narrows the centre on a weekday is parked cars rather than stalls. Castle Hill rises steeply on the north-west side, and the town also has a Steep Street and a Long Hill, so gradient is a live question on a Mere job in a way it is not on a flat one. Getting a removal lorry off the A303 and into Mere
The A303 runs along the northern edge of Mere rather than through it, and has done since the bypass opened in 1976. That helps the approach and helps nothing at all once you are off it, because the turn down into town puts you straight onto streets laid out long before anyone built a Luton body. East of Mere the trunk road drops back to single carriageway for about seven and a half miles towards Chicklade Bottom, which is where the summer and bank holiday queues form, so a load routed in from the Salisbury side can lose an hour nobody planned for. Stourhead sits three miles north-west and is signposted off the same road, busy enough that the National Trust recorded over 380,000 visits there in a single year, so on a fine weekend the roads on that side of town fill up with people who are not moving house. We start the bigger loads early on those days. In the town itself the B3092 is doing two jobs at once, Gillingham road one way and Stourhead road the other, and Salisbury Street is the B3095 rather than a quiet side street, which is why a car parked half on the kerb there causes more trouble than it looks like it should.

From the old centre out to the hamlets
The centre is the old part of Mere: stone and render, sash windows, narrow hallways and staircases that turn where you would rather they did not. There is listed property in there, Salisbury Street included, and a listed doorway is a good reason to bring runner mats and door guards rather than find out the hard way. Move out from The Square and it changes quickly, to the closes and cul-de-sacs on the edge of town where the constraint is the driveway rather than the street, and then to the hamlets at Barrow Street, Burton, Charnage, Rook Street and Southbrook, where the question stops being the staircase and starts being whether the lane will take the vehicle and where it turns round afterwards. We measure the awkward item, usually a wardrobe, a piano or a corner sofa, against the actual doorway before move day rather than on the morning.

We check the approach and the turning space when we quote, then pick the vehicle to suit the worst point on the route rather than the best one.
Can I add packing or storage to a Mere move?
