Weymouth, DT3 and DT4, and the 40 miles in between
Weymouth is 40 miles south of our Shaftesbury yard, about an hour down through Blandford and Dorchester, which makes it the furthest town on our patch. There is no Weymouth depot and no Weymouth phone number: the crew travels, and the price says so in writing rather than running on a mileage meter. DT4 holds the town centre, the Esplanade and the harbour. Most of it sits inside the Weymouth Town Centre Conservation Area, one of the fifteen conservation areas Dorset Council maintains across Weymouth and Portland, and the seafront runs as one long listed Georgian and Regency frontage, with Devonshire Buildings, Belvidere Terrace, Pulteney Buildings, Royal Terrace and Victoria Terrace among the named blocks. Between the seafront and the railway station sits the Park District, a residents' permit zone that changes what a van is allowed to do by the hour rather than by the day. DT3 is the outward half, running through Chickerell, Littlemoor, Preston, Overcombe and Sutton Poyntz. A good share of the work here is retirement-related, downsizers taking a seafront flat, and much of the rest is families moving inland for the Wey Valley and All Saints' catchments.

Getting a removal lorry onto a Weymouth seafront kerb
Dorset Council's civil parking enforcement policy is the document that actually decides where we can stand. It exempts removals vehicles from most on-street restrictions while they are actively loading or unloading to an adjacent property, and it says in terms that it is customary for a removals company to tell the council a removal is coming, so the space can be assessed and a bay suspension advised if one is needed. We make that call rather than lean on the exemption, because the same policy lets an enforcement officer issue a penalty the moment a vehicle stops looking actively engaged. The bays set the rhythm. Trinity Road, South Parade and Pilgrims Way are one-hour maximum stay between 8am and 6pm. The northern end of the Esplanade allows four hours in the same window and is free overnight from 6pm to 8am, which is the real reason a seafront load starts at six in the morning rather than nine. Inside the Park District permit zone the wait is one hour from 9am to 6pm and residents' permit holders only from 6pm to 9am, with a ten-minute observation for loading outside those hours, five minutes on a loading bay or double yellows, and no allowance at all anywhere else. Vehicle size then splits the town. The Old Harbour side, Hope Square, Trinity Street, Brewers Quay and the Custom House Quay frontages take a Luton and a shuttle rather than a full truck. Abbotsbury Road and the Westham streets take a 7.5-tonne. Wyke Road, Portland Road and Lanehouse Rocks Road carry anything. Littlemoor, Preston, Sutton Poyntz and the Chickerell estates have full truck access throughout. Two things sit outside anyone's control. The Town Bridge lifts two-hourly from 8am, with the last lift at 6pm on the winter routine and 8pm from 15 April to 15 September, plus a later one through high summer, and every lift stops the road across the harbour, so a crossing gets planned into a gap rather than left to chance. And Portland Beach Road is the only road onto Portland: it is a tied island, so when Dorset Council closes the causeway for a spring tide with a storm behind it, as it did in January 2026, there is no diversion at all and a DT5 job moves to another day.
Property types
From the listed Esplanade terraces to the Littlemoor estates
The Esplanade and the harbour are the period end of the work. The listed Georgian and Regency terraces along the seafront, Royal Crescent, Brunswick Terrace, Gloucester Row and the Custom House Quay frontages among them, are largely Grade II with restoration work ongoing, so period-furniture handling and narrow-stair planning are the default rather than the exception, and a listed frontage means nothing gets propped, screwed or leaned against on the way out. Inland, the DT4 0 streets carry the Victorian and Edwardian terraces around Westham and Abbotsbury Road, with Spa Road, Newstead Road and Granby Way on the same side of town. The Park District streets between the seafront and the station, Carlton Road North and Glendinning Avenue among them, are the ones where the permit zone rather than the staircase decides the day. DT4 8 covers Rodwell, including Rodwell Avenue and the streets dropping towards the harbour. DT4 9 runs out through Wyke Regis and Southlands on Wyke Road, Buxton Road, Portland Road and Lanehouse Rocks Road, mostly post-war semis with driveways and room to work. DT3 is the newer half. Littlemoor, Preston, Overcombe and the Chickerell estates account for most of the family-upsize moves, and Louviers Road and the roads off Littlemoor Road are typical of them: full truck access, a driveway, and the whole job done in one load. Seafront flats above the Esplanade shops and around the Pavilion are where the retirement downsizers land, and those are the ones where the load window gets booked before the furniture is measured.
Practical tips
What we check before we book a Weymouth date
The visitor season is the first thing we look at. From May to September the A354 approach and the Esplanade itself are predictably busy, so bigger seafront moves load between 6am and 8am where the customer is willing, using the free overnight window on the Esplanade bays before charging starts at 8am. The second is the September weekend. IRONMAN 70.3 Weymouth finishes on the Esplanade every September, and Dorset Council issues temporary traffic orders across the seafront and the run route for it, suspending the southbound bus lane on the Esplanade and dropping the limit to 10mph. A seafront move that weekend gets a different date, and we say so at quote stage rather than on the morning. Worth knowing what is no longer a constraint: Weymouth Carnival used to close the seafront in August, but the last one ran in 2018 and the revival did not come off, so August here is busy rather than blocked. The third is the weather, and it only matters for Portland. Before we commit to a DT5 date we look at the tide and the wind together, because Portland Beach Road floods on a spring tide with a storm behind it and there is no second road on.
