The yard is 28 miles away on the A350, about 50 minutes door to door, which is why Poole jobs get an early start rather than a mid morning one. One thing catches people out when they give us a postcode over the phone, which is that Poole's districts overlap on the ground. Parkstone addresses fall in both BH14 and BH15, and Canford Cliffs addresses fall in both BH13 and BH14, so we plan from the address rather than the outcode. Hamworthy sits across the water from the Old Town and the Twin Sails crossing is a lifting bridge, so an opening holds the traffic and a tight slot can slip.

Routes, access & parking
The Quay closure, the two lifting bridges and the Sandbanks road
The Old Town decides most Poole moves. Poole Quay is closed to motor vehicles from 1 April to 31 October, 10am to 10pm, under a BCP Council traffic order effective from 3 November 2025. So a summer move on the Quay is an early one, loaded and away before ten, or it waits for the winter when the Quay is open all day. Part of the High Street above it is pedestrianised as well, and the street still runs down to the water, so the vehicle stops further out than people expect and the carry gets longer. Hamworthy is the other timing job, because both crossings to it lift. Poole Bridge and Twin Sails run lift slots on the half hour from 5:30am to 11:30pm, one immediately after the other, Twin Sails first before 2:30pm and Poole Bridge first after 3:30pm. They only lift on request, so most slots pass with nothing happening, but when one goes the other goes with it and there is no third route. Away from the water Poole is straightforward. West Quay Road is a one way trunk road rather than a lane, so a missed turning costs a lap of the town. Parkstone, Branksome and Hamworthy take a full size truck, and Canford Heath and Creekmoor are ordinary estate access. Sandbanks is the last constraint: one B road in and the same road out, Banks Road onto Panorama Road, with gated properties arranged with the estate before the truck sets off. The only other way off the peninsula is the chain ferry across to Shell Bay on the Studland side, every twenty minutes from 7am to 11pm, and it queues in summer.

Branksome Park, Canford Cliffs and Sandbanks: large detached houses, and each of those three is its own conservation area (Branksome Park and Chine Gardens, Canford Cliffs Village, and Sandbanks). Trees inside a conservation area are protected, so the mature planting along those roads is not going anywhere and the vehicle has to fit what is there. Hamworthy, Canford Heath and Creekmoor: post war and modern estates, the easiest access in Poole and usually the simplest quote.
Practical tips
Timing a Poole move, and the parking waiver
If your date is flexible and you are moving on the Quay itself, take the winter half of the year, because the 10am to 10pm closure only runs from April to October. August is the month to plan hardest around: BCP Council runs firework nights on the Quay on Thursday evenings through August, and the crowds are there long before the fireworks are. For parking, BCP runs a daily waiver for tradespeople in the Poole area, arranged by phone for a named vehicle on a named day, covering single and double yellow lines, resident bays, limited waiting bays and on street pay and display. It does not cover loading bays, disabled bays, or a yellow line that also carries a loading ban, which is exactly the restriction you meet outside a Quay-side frontage, so the vehicle plan gets made at survey rather than on the doorstep. It is a same day phone call rather than something needing a week of notice, but the office is open weekdays only, so a Saturday move needs it arranging on the Friday. One boundary to watch: that waiver is BCP's, and Upton and Lytchett Matravers sit with Dorset Council, which is a separate application.
