Moving House in Summer: What to Expect in the Busy Season
Summer is the busiest time to move in the UK. Here is how the heat, the school holidays and the month-end rush change a move, and how to book right.
Summer is the busiest time of year to move house in the UK, and it is easy to see why. The weather is kinder, the days are long, and families would rather move while the children are off school. The flip side is that good dates book up fast, and the heat changes how a move actually runs. Here is what to expect, and how to book so the season works for you and not against you.
Book earlier than you think you need to
Demand peaks from late June through August, and the end of every month is busier still because that is when most sales complete. If your move lands on a Friday at the end of the month in summer, you are competing for the same crews as everyone else. The earlier you can pencil in a date, even a provisional one, the better your chances of getting the slot you want.
Heat is the part most people forget
A loaded van gets hot, and some of what goes inside does not enjoy it. Candles and crayons soften, aerosols and pressurised cans are a real risk in high temperatures, and electronics, vinyl records and houseplants all suffer if they sit in the heat too long. Pack heat-sensitive items so they travel last and come off first, and keep anything irreplaceable with you in the car where you can manage the temperature.
Completion days cluster, so flexibility helps
Most chains complete on a Friday, and in summer those Fridays fill weeks ahead. If you have any room to move midweek or earlier in the month, you will usually find more choice and a calmer day. It is not always possible when you are in a chain, but where it is, it is worth asking the question.
What we do differently when it is hot
On hot days our crews start early to get the heavy lifting done before the afternoon sun, and we keep water on the van for the team. We plan the load so heat-sensitive boxes are not sitting in direct sun, and we watch the crew as closely as the clock, because a rushed, overheated move is how things get dropped. None of it slows the job down. It just keeps the day safe and steady.
A few things that help on a summer move
- Keep a few bottles of water and some shade handy for yourself and the crew
- Have a plan for children and pets, ideally somewhere cool and out of the way
- Clear the access route early so doors and paths are not blocked in the heat
- Set heat-sensitive and valuable items aside to travel with you
- Confirm parking at both ends, as summer streets are busier

Frequent questions
Quick answers to common moving questions
Summer is the peak, roughly late June through August, with the end of each month busiest of all because that is when most property sales complete. Fridays are the busiest day. If you can be flexible on timing, midweek or earlier in the month is usually calmer.
As early as you reasonably can. Once you have a likely date, even a provisional one, get in touch so we can hold a slot. Summer dates, especially end-of-month Fridays, book up weeks ahead, so leaving it late narrows your choices.
Your price depends on the size of the move, the distance and the access at both ends, not the time of year. The bigger difference in summer is availability, so the main reason to book early is to get the date you want. Tell us your details and we will send a fixed price within the hour.
Pack candles, aerosols, electronics, records and houseplants so they load last and unload first, and keep anything irreplaceable with you in the car. Let us know in advance if you have items that do not cope well with heat and we will plan the load around them.
Sometimes, yes, especially midweek, though summer is our busiest season so it is never guaranteed. The quickest way to find out is to ask. Send us your dates and we will tell you what we can do and send a fixed price within the hour.
