Removal Costs & Quotes: Your Questions Answered

Honest answers to every removal cost question, plus how we give a fixed written quote within the hour that does not change on the day.

By Connor, Owner - Marley Moves

Ask three removal firms how much your move will cost and you will get three different answers, priced three different ways. That is why there is no single number for "how much does a move cost". This page answers each money question honestly, from what a typical house move costs to whether there are hidden extras, and shows how we take the guesswork out of it: a fixed written quote given within the hour that does not change on the day. If you want the full picture, read our full guide to removal costs and quotes.

How much do removals cost in the UK?

There is no single price, because a removal is priced on your specific move, not a fixed rate card. The cost depends on the size of your home, how much you are moving, the distance, the access at both ends, and whether you want us to pack for you.

As a rough guide, a local house move starts from £600, fixed in writing. A long-distance move typically runs £900–£2,800, fully insured, depending on the size of the home and the miles involved. Those are starting points, not your price. The only figure that means anything for your move is the fixed written quote we give you, and you can get that within the hour.

How much does it cost to move a 3-bed house?

It depends almost entirely on distance, because a local 3-bed move and a cross-country 3-bed move are two very different jobs. For a longer haul, a 3-bed to the middle of the country typically comes in around £1,800–£2,500, fully insured. A local 3-bed move within Dorset, Somerset or Wiltshire will usually sit below that.

We would rather not have you plan around a range, though. Volume, access, stairs and packing all move the number, so the accurate figure is always the fixed written quote for your actual home. Send us the details and we will price it properly, within the hour.

What determines the cost of a removal?

The price of a removal comes down to a handful of clear factors:

- Size of your home and the number of bedrooms, which sets the crew and van size.
- Volume of belongings, since it is the amount you are moving, not just the room count, that fills the van.
- Distance and mileage between the old and new address.
- Access at both ends: stairs, upper floors, parking, and long carries from the door to the van.
- Packing service, if you would like us to pack for you rather than pack yourself.
- Specialist items such as a piano or antiques that need extra care and handling.
- Date and season, as busier days and peak months carry more demand.
- Storage, if there is a gap between your completion dates and your things need somewhere safe in between.

We weigh all of these when we quote, so nothing on this list becomes a surprise later.

Do removal companies charge by the hour or a fixed price?

It varies by firm, and it matters more than most people realise. We give you a fixed written quote, not an hourly rate, and that price does not change on the day once you have it.

With an hourly or estimate-based model, you do not know the final bill until the job is finished, so a slow day or an unexpected delay lands on you. A fixed written price removes that risk: the number we agree is the number you pay. You can plan your move around it with confidence, which is the whole point of asking us for a quote.

How do I get a removal quote, and how long does it take?

You get a fixed written quote from us within the hour. Send us the basics of your move, your addresses, the size of your home, your rough moving date and anything unusual, and we will price it and write it up.

For larger or long-distance moves, we also offer a free pre-move survey so we can see the job properly before committing a figure. Either way, you end up with a written price you can rely on rather than a vague estimate. Start your quote here, and if you want to understand the numbers first, our full guide to removal costs and quotes walks through them.

What is the cheapest day or time to move?

Mid-week and mid-month tend to be quieter than Fridays and the end of the month, and less demand often means more flexibility on price and dates. Fridays and month-end are the busiest windows, because so many completions land there.

We do not publish a fixed "quiet day" discount, because your price still depends on the move itself. The best thing to do is tell us your preferred date when you ask for your quote, and we will price it for that day. If your timing is flexible, mention it and we will factor that in.

Are there any hidden costs with removals?

No. The written quote we give you is the total you pay, with no hidden extras bolted on afterwards.

The one thing that can change a quote is a change to the job itself on the day, such as extra items that were not in the original list, or an access issue nobody flagged in advance. If anything like that comes up, we agree it with you and confirm it in writing before we act on it, so you are never handed a bigger bill without knowing why. The number on your written quote is what you pay for the move you booked.

Is it worth hiring a removal company?

For most house moves, yes, once you weigh what a DIY move actually involves. Hiring a firm buys you an experienced crew, a fixed price you can budget around, and cover for your belongings if something goes wrong.

We carry Public Liability insurance up to £2.5m and Goods in Transit cover up to £50k per load, so your things are protected in transit. Set that against the cost and risk of hiring a van, rounding up help, lifting heavy furniture yourself and hoping nothing gets damaged, and a professional move usually earns its place. If you would rather leave the heavy lifting to us, get a fixed quote within the hour.

Do you offer storage, and what does it cost?

Yes. We offer secure, ventilated storage containers at our Shaftesbury yard from £30 per week per container.

Storage is most useful when there is a gap between your completion dates, so your belongings have somewhere safe and dry to wait rather than being crammed into a spare room or a friend's garage. You can read more on our storage page, or mention it when you ask for your quote and we will fold it into your written price.
