Our Removals Packing Service: Your Questions Answered
Is it worth paying for packers? What full and part packing include, how long it takes and whether your belongings are covered, all answered.
Packing is the part of moving most people dread, and it is the job that quietly swallows evenings and weekends in the run-up to move day. A professional packing service takes it off your hands, but it is a paid add-on, so it is fair to ask whether it earns its place in your quote. Below are the questions we are asked most about how our packing works, what it covers and whether it is worth it, whether you are moving within Wincanton or right across the country. If you would rather talk it through, tell us about your move and we will send a fixed written quote within the hour.
Is it worth paying for professional packers?
For most people, yes, though not for every move. Packing a whole house properly takes far longer than most of us expect, usually several evenings and a couple of weekends, and it is the single biggest cause of moving day stress. Paying a crew to do it buys back that time, and everything is packed with the right materials and technique so less gets broken. Where it is less worthwhile is a small flat, or a move where you have weeks of spare time and do not mind the sorting. A sensible middle ground is part packing, where we handle the fragile and awkward rooms and you do the rest. Our packing service sits alongside your house removal, and the cost is set out clearly in your fixed quote so there is no guesswork.
What is the difference between a full packing service and part packing?
A full packing service means our crew packs everything in your home, from the kitchen and wardrobes down to the last drawer, using our own boxes and wrapping. Part packing means we take on the rooms you would rather not tackle, most often the kitchen, the loft, the garage or anything fragile, and you pack the straightforward things like books and clothes yourself. Part packing keeps the cost down while still removing the worst of the work. We will help you decide which suits your move when we quote.
How long does a professional packing service take?
It depends on the size of your home and how much you have accumulated over the years. Packing is usually done in the day or two before your move rather than on move day itself, so the loading can start first thing. A one or two bedroom home is often a single session, while a larger family house may need a full day of packing beforehand. We confirm the timing with you when we survey your home, so it fits neatly around your completion date.
What does the packing include, and what materials do you use?
The service includes the packing materials as well as the labour, so you are not buying boxes and tape separately. We bring sturdy removal boxes in a range of sizes, plenty of packing paper and bubble wrap, tape, and specialist cartons for things like wardrobes, pictures and crockery. Glassware, china and ornaments are wrapped individually, furniture is protected, and boxes are labelled by room so unloading at the other end is quick. If you would rather pack yourself, our room-by-room packing FAQs walk through how to do it well.
What will your crew not pack, and what should I keep with me?
There are a few things it is best to keep with you rather than in the van: passports, jewellery, medication, keys, chargers and any paperwork you will need on the day. For safety reasons we also cannot carry certain items, such as petrol, gas bottles, fireworks and other hazardous goods, and it is worth using up or safely disposing of open food, plants and anything perishable before the move. If you are unsure about a particular item, just ask us when we quote and we will tell you straight.
Are the things your crew packs covered by insurance?
Yes. Every Marley Moves job carries goods in transit cover up to £50,000 per load and public liability cover up to £2.5 million, and there is no extra charge for it. When our crew packs your belongings, they are covered on the same terms right through the move. If you own anything of unusually high value, tell us when we quote so it is properly accounted for. You can read more about how our cover works in our removals insurance FAQs.
Do you unpack at the new home too?
We can, yes. Unpacking is offered as part of the packing service, so the crew can unwrap and place your belongings room by room, put beds back together and take the empty boxes and packing materials away. Plenty of customers ask us to unpack just the kitchen and the bedrooms so the essentials are usable on the first night, and then work through the rest themselves. Let us know what you would like when you book and we will build it into your quote.
