House removals in Gillingham: a local's guide

Tight lanes, parking, timing — what's specific about moving in and around Gillingham.

Moving Tips

Gillingham, Dorset isn't a tricky town to move in — but it has its quirks. Narrow town-centre lanes. Railway bridge height restrictions. Streets around the station where parking is a gamble. Rural villages on the edge with single-track access.

If you're moving in or out of Gillingham, a few things worth knowing.

The railway bridge on Station Road

The bridge on Station Road has a height restriction. Most removal vans are fine, but anything taller than 3.0m needs to route around via New Road and Queen Street. Worth mentioning to your removals firm when you book.

Town-centre parking

For moves on High Street, Church Walk, or the lanes behind the market, parking suspensions from Dorset Council make the job much easier. Apply at least a week ahead through the council website.

For moves near the station, there's usually room on side streets. Just factor in the walk.

Rural access

Motcombe, Milton-on-Stour, West Stour, Silton — all lovely villages, all with lanes that get awkward for anything bigger than a Transit.

For properties with tight access, a shuttle is sometimes cheaper: park a large van on a main road, shuttle in with a smaller vehicle. Ask for a shuttle quote alongside the main one.

Good days, bad days

End-of-month Fridays are brutal for traffic around the A303 and A30 junctions. If you can move mid-week, it's calmer and often cheaper.

Mid-morning starts beat the 8am school-run chaos on the B3095.

Local knowledge matters

A crew that's moved a hundred families in and out of Gillingham knows where to park at each address, which lanes to avoid at school pickup, and which village has the post that catches the back of the van when you turn.

That's us. If you're moving in or around Gillingham, we've probably already been to your street.
