Moving Large Furniture: What to Measure and Plan Before Moving Day

Large furniture causes problems on moving day when the item fits the room but not the route out. Before the move, measure the furniture and the narrowest parts of the route so you know what can travel assembled and what may need taking apart. Measure the furniture first

Record the height, width and depth of bulky pieces such as wardrobes, sofas, bed frames and dining tables. For awkward shapes, also note removable feet, legs, shelves, doors or other parts that change the overall dimensions.

Then measure the route

Check door openings, hallways, stair turns and landings at both properties. The tightest point matters more than the size of the room. Low ceilings, handrails and sharp turns can also reduce the usable space.

Decide what needs disassembling

If a piece will not clear the route safely, find out whether it was designed to be dismantled. Keep fixings together in a labelled bag and take a few photographs before disassembly so reassembly is easier later.

Flag fragile or unusually valuable pieces

Antiques, glass, stone tops, veneers and other delicate finishes need to be identified before the move is planned. Tell the removal company what the item is, its approximate dimensions and anything unusual about access rather than leaving the crew to discover it on arrival.

Do not forget access outside

A difficult doorway is only one part of the route. Note steps, gates, long carries and restricted parking as well. Photographs can be useful when an access point is hard to describe.
