Man and Van Removals: Your Questions Answered
Man and van removals questions answered: what we move, who carries, and what drives the cost. Fixed price within the hour across Dorset.
A man and van move is the smaller, lighter-touch side of what we do at Marley Moves. We load, drive, and unload single items, single rooms, and smaller homes, without the bigger crew or full pack a whole-house move needs. This page answers the practical questions people ask us before they book: what we carry, who does the lifting, how far we go, and what shapes the price. Every man and van job is still quoted properly. You get a fixed price within the hour, and there is never a meter running while we work.
What is a man and van service, and how is it different from full removals?
A man and van move is a lighter, smaller-scale job: we load, transport, and unload single items, single rooms, or smaller homes. Full removals are the bigger version. They bring a larger crew, optional packing, dismantling and reassembly of furniture, and bigger vehicles built for moving a whole house at once. Both do the same core thing, which is move your belongings safely. The difference is scale. A man and van is the right tool for a smaller job, and our man and van and full house removals pages explain each in more detail.
What size move is a man and van right for?
Man and van suits single items, single rooms, flats, smaller homes, and part-loads. It is the lighter end of moving, where you do not need a big crew or a full pack-up. For a larger or whole-house move, full removals tends to fit better, with more hands and a bigger vehicle. We do not set a fixed van capacity or a hard bedroom limit, because the right choice depends on what you are actually moving. If you are not sure which suits you, the quote conversation sorts it out quickly.
Do you help load and carry, or do I do that myself?
Yes, the crew does the lifting. Loading, carrying, and unloading are all part of the service, so you are not left to shift the heavy pieces yourself. If you want to help to speed things up you are welcome to, but you do not have to. We handle items carefully and protect them in transit, so furniture and fragile pieces are looked after on the journey rather than just thrown in the back. The point of a man and van is that the work is done for you, not alongside you.
Can you move a single item or just one or two big pieces?
Yes, single items and part-loads are one of the main things a man and van is for. A sofa, a wardrobe, a fridge or washing machine, or a handful of items together are all everyday jobs for us. Small jobs are genuinely welcome, not an afterthought. We do plenty of single-item moves close to home, around Shaftesbury and Gillingham and the wider area, as well as further afield. If you have one awkward piece to shift, just tell us what it is and where it needs to go.
How is a man and van move priced, and what affects the cost?
The price comes down to four things: the distance we travel, how much there is to move, how easy the access is, and how many people the job safely needs. Stairs, tight parking, and long carries from door to van all add to the work, so they shape the quote. We do not run a meter or charge by the clock. You get a fixed price agreed up front, so the number you say yes to is the number you pay. Tell us what you are moving and we will send a fixed quote within the hour. Get a fixed quote.
How far will you travel, or is it just local moves?
Local moves across Dorset, Somerset, and Wiltshire are our core work, but we are not limited to them. We also do longer-distance and UK-wide moves when you need one, including longer hauls covered on our long-distance removals page. Our base is Shaftesbury in Dorset, with a Yeovil base as well, so the area around there is closest to home. Distance is one of the things that shapes the quote, so the further the move, the more it factors in. Wherever you are heading, tell us the two addresses and we will price it properly.
How much notice do I need to give to book?
We will always try to fit you in, including shorter-notice moves, as long as we have a crew free for the date. Booking earlier gives you more choice of day, which matters more in busier periods when the diary fills up. We cannot promise a same-day turnaround or guarantee a fixed lead time, because availability depends on what is already booked. The quickest way to firm things up is to get a fixed quote within the hour, so you can lock in a price and a date and plan around it with confidence.
Are my belongings insured during a man and van move?
Yes, your belongings are covered while they are with us. We carry Public Liability cover up to £2.5m and Goods in Transit cover up to £50k per load, so your items are insured from the moment we load them to the moment we set them down. The cover applies to man and van jobs just as it does to full removals. For a plain-English breakdown of what each type of cover means, see our removals insurance explained page.
